Coffee: A Blogger's Best Friend

I have a pretty decent home office setup.  But there's a problem:  sometimes I just can't write when I'm at home.

I often find it helpful to go out to a coffee shop.  This seems kind of counter-intuitive--you'd think I get more done in the comfort of my own home.  The coffee shop, after all, is full of distractions (I often end up talking to new people).  But it seems the different environment gives me energy and focus.

This isn't just a blogging thing for me--it's a writing thing.  God willing, my second book will be out in 2010.  There's no telling how much of it was written outside my home office (the coffee shop, the rooftop of my apartment building, etc).

What about you?  Does changing your environment help you to write new content (blogging or otherwise)?

In case you are wondering, I'm writing this article over a cup of BK Joe (Burger King coffee).  They've got free wifi here.

  1. I totally can relate to that. A change in setting somehow jolts your mind and makes you actually do more. I think the familiarity of a certain locations contributes to the decrease in productivity. My best ideas comes when I am commuting in a shuttle and al I can do is think.

I can't write, I can't paint, i can't even read when there are other people walking around. I get so distracted BUT - It seems like music helps me focus. so as long as I'm listening to something (music - fast or mellow) wherever I am, I think I can write. is that strange?

  4. It all depends. Sometimes my ideas flow freely in the home office. However, there is a certain energy one feels when at the local coffee shop or BK. I find people watching to be especially stimulating, and something someone does might spur on an idea.

One thing's for sure, I do my best thinking and writing in the morning, whether at home or away.

I can relate to this! A change is as good as a holiday!

I find myself distracted in a busy restaurant or coffee shop if there are TV screens, but a good cup of coffee (or a beer in the evening) is a great way to relax and get into the mood!
